The Core Message
When a person living with HIV takes HIV medicine as prescribed and achieves and maintains an undetectable viral load, they do not transmit HIV through sex. This is known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) or Treatment as Prevention.
Why It Matters
- Reduces fear & stigma.
- Encourages testing & early treatment.
- Supports medication adherence.
- Helps mixed‑status couples have sex and plan families with confidence (with medical guidance).
What Does “Undetectable” Mean?
Viral load so low that standard lab tests can’t detect it (often <200 copies/mL; lab cutoffs vary). Staying undetectable usually requires taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) every day and regular viral load lab checks.
